This, the first of the resplendent Pink Panther series, is an fantastic film. To know that originally Peter Ustinov was cast to play Jacques Clouseau as a straight, inept French detective is a sobering opinion. After Ustinov dropped out, of course, Peter Sellers got the role and after consultation with Blake Edwards, decided to develop him not only inept, but also bumbling and accident prone, a characterization that defines how we reflect of Clouseau today. This film is inspiring in that since it is the first of the series it is keen to peek the origins of the character, and how different he is here than in later ‘Panther’ films. Here is clumsy and prone to pratfalls, but is less flamboyantly slapstick than in the later films.

The film also stars the astonishing David Niven, who plays the perfect suave English thief, and a very young Robert Wagner as his equally debonair nephew. Female stars are the lovely Claudia Cardinale and Capucine, two of the top European actresses and models from the era.

The movie is a bit more sedate than the later films in the series, but quiet is one of the funniest movies of the sixties. ‘A Shot In The Dark’, also released in 1964, as the first sequel, began the transformation to the later formulas with additions such as the incredible Herbert Lom. ‘The Pink Panther’ does introduce the titillating ‘Pink Panther’ short for the first time, as well as the often imitated, never duplicated title theme. Other viewers will have their have current scenes, and the costume party is surely one of the highlights of the film, but for my money the best scenes in the film revolve around Clouseau trying to woo his wife by playing his Stradivarius violin, over many protestations. If I were doing it today, I would capture this DVD as piece of the multi DVD ‘Pink Panther’ plot, where it also includes a few engaging bonuses such as a ‘trivia track’, which adds sizable tidbits about the film.

Peter Sellers was a funny genius, and the world collected waits for another genius of his stature. I judge we will be waiting a long, long time.

This first Pink Panther movie is as superb as the next “A Shot in the Sad.” Both are edifying films, with a sound narrative, a creatively hilarious and bright screenplay, a well-developed plot of characters, and a unusual style of filming that elevates “slapstick comedy” to the highest level of sophistication. there are so many quotable lines that are well-worth to write them down as you view the movie. The soundtrack song “Meglio Stasera(It had better be tonight) “is estimable and written to fit perfectly into the theme and mood of the film. Fran Jeffries sings it very well to a crowd of people by a fireplace, and she is as exquisite as this scene itself. Claudia Cardinale and Capucine display style and charm in their roles. The title sequence runs over 7 minutes and it is as gracious as the movie itself. The 60’s report, in my understanding, the highest point in fashion and general pop culture which truly reflects the highest level of sophistication and taste; in this context, this movie is one of the movies that best narrate the 60’s. I agree with the other viewer that this movie should figure in the 100 Best movies of any list. The DVD is grand with the finest relate quality; check the trailer because it is hysterically funny and very fresh, not the case of novel movie trailers. This movie is ideal for a cozy evening with friends and your approved martinis. I impartial wish there were a special DVD edition with Director Blake Edwards’ commentary on separate track, and of others keen in the making of this masterpiece.

The film at 85 minutes is fantastic. The extras at over 6.5 hours are wonderful. This DVD state is a source of all things Beat that I will be looking assist at for years. “The Unusual York Times”

Jerry Aronson has augmented his crisp, straightforward 1993 documentary portrait of the poet Allen Ginsberg with six hours of extra material for this double-disc release, which now makes it a scholarly resource as well as a remarkably clearheaded search for of a singularly complex individual.

Mr. Aronson’s film follows Ginsberg from his middle-class upbringing in Original Jersey through the media explosion that was the Beat movement, his role in the flowering youth movement of the 1960s and his last years as a devoted Buddhist and political activist. Those interviewed range from stop friends and family members to artists whose relationship to Ginsberg was more remote (Beck, Bono and Johnny Depp, while the footage Mr. Aronson has gathered includes lengthy excerpts from Ginsberg’s 1998 memorial tribute at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Ginsberg and Bob Dylan visiting Jack Kerouac’s grave, a 1965 reading with Neal Cassady at the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco and sequences from Jonas Mekas’s touching recount of Ginsberg’s wake, “Scenes From Allen’s Last Three Days on Earth as a Spirit.”

There are two features of Ginsberg’s personality that near through over and over in this provocative documentary: he was a deeply wounded man, and he was a deeply lovable one. The two were obviously connected: Ginsberg’s wounds made him both vulnerable and compassionate. They could also form him rage against a world that condoned war and injustice, and all of these sides of him near through in his poetry.

Ginsberg’s ur-wound was the tragedy of his mother, a noteworthy woman who sadly suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, was in and out of institutions during Ginsberg’s youth, and finally died in one. As a boy, Ginsberg was frequently charged with her care. As his stepmother says in the film, he was exposed to blueprint too considerable for a young boy to recall in. His feelings of helplessness, frustration, impatience, fancy, guilt, and awe in the face of his mom’s illness and increasingly bizarre behavior marked him for life. Thankfully, his relationship with his father Louis, a lyric poet, was one of tenderness, mutual respect, and deep savor.

Ginsberg’s discouraged relationship with his mother, as well as his genesis from beat poet to cosmic poet to Buddhist poet to spacious weak man of American poetry is tracked in the film. Especially welcome are the long and grand clips of Ginsberg reading his poetry: long sections of “Howl,” all of “Kaddish,” and others, sometimes effect in music. There’s also a clip from Ginsberg’s appearance on Buckley’s “Firing Line,” in which the two men stood one another down. Lots of vintage collected photography and cinema featuring the beat poets round out the documentary.

The one thing missing in the film was more than a brief mention of Ginsberg’s lifelong relationship with Peter Orlovsky. Ginsberg does say at one point, quite touchingly, that he and Peter made life vows to one another, and a rather vague reference to Orlovsky’s later mental and alcohol troubles is made. But the relationship is for the most portion passed over in silence.

A expedient film, both for fans of Ginsberg’s poetry and those who know it only by hearsay. A fitting Kaddish for a man who’s heart and imagination stretched cosmically.

So speaks Dieter Dengler when asked for comment at the destroy of his promenade of jungle captivity in Laos. RESCUE DAWN is as noteworthy about the courage and fortitude of a captured soldier during wartime as it is about a right incident. From the inherent optimism of pilot Dieter Dengler (played with commitment and finesse by Christian Bale) the chronicle transcends biopic and offers lessons for life in general; the human spirit can be indefatigable.

Writer/director Werner Herzog has expanded his 1997 documentary about Dieter Dengler and in doing so he has provided us entry into the psyches of soldiers captured by the enemy and the extraordinarily trying conditions in which they survive. The optimistic and involved Dengler is sent on a classified mission to bomb definite targets in Laos in 1965 with his fellow pilots including his best friend Spook (Toby Huss) . Denlger is shot down and captured, interrogated, tortured, and placed in a prison with fellow inmates Duane (Steve Zahn in a career changing excellent performance), Gene (the emaciated and advantageous Jeremy Davies), Phisit (Abhijati ‘Meuk’ Jusakul), and Procet (Lek Chaiyan Chunsuttiwat) . The living conditions are deplorable: the men are starved, chained together making even the possibility of caring for bodily functions negligible, and the correct is shameful. Dengler changes that using his ingenuity and immediately plans for rush. Duane aids Dengler but Gene fears the consequences of an aborted speed attempt. Yet with Dengler’s expertise and cunning the hurry into the jungle is planned and is essentially successful - until the other enemy (the jungle) reduces the forces to one. As Dengler is rescued he is left with the ghosts of his fellow inmates, a factor that will haunt him and alter his life after rescue.

Christian Bale’s performance is arrive perfect as are the performances by Zahn and Davies. The film feels too long at times but that also suggests that director Herzog wants the audience to understand the mental deterioration and stagnant time cycle that cripples prisoners of war. The atmosphere of the prison camp is presented well and if the ending of the film becomes a bit too ‘Hollywood’, after the 2+ hours of prison confinement that is somewhat of a relief. RESCUE DAWN is a great film with some of the best acting of the year’s sever and certainly deserves the attention of a wide audience. Grady Harp, November 07

Rescue Dawn is fresh among war films. It’s not the speedily paced action thriller of so many fictionalized war movies, yet it offers the chronicle of a precise man told tastefully through suspense and drama. For those looking for graphic battle gore, this isn’t the movie for you. If you can bewitch the time to inspect and luxuriate in how a horrendous station can impact a man’s thoughts and identity, you will glean a lot to learn from here.

Christian Bale plays Dieter Dengler, a pilot shot down at the onset of the Vietnam War in neighboring Laos. He miraculously survives the shatter and has to contend with his catch and reeducation by his communist captors. He is eventually taken to a camp where there are other Americans. The rest of the area, while long, is best experienced without an outline.

Bale’s acting is broad. The supporting cast is equally as impressive, especially Steve Zahn as Duane and Jeremy Davies as Gene. The lush rain-forest is also a character in this movie, and the cinematography beautifully captures one of the world’s most awe-inspiring and unsafe places.

The memoir was previously told in Werner Herzog’s documentary, “Minute Dieter Needs to Wing.” Miniature Dieter Needs to Skim The script is nicely written, but mighty of it quiet comes across as a documentary. The director uses suspense and time to stutter the terror of the region. That’s section of the reason wider film audiences are turned off or left wanting more.

I suspect that this movie would have had more visual impact in theatres. Unfortunately, it never reached wide theatrical release in the USA. The closest viewing most of us can have is to try to survey the Blu-Ray version, which is visually resplendent.

Ultimately, what will a man do to survive such an ordeal? What would you do to survive? This movie is a careful observe that will appeal to film lovers. It isn’t pro or against anything. It is simply the fable of one man’s ordeal.

The Doors in L.A. - 20 shrimp feature; Robbie Krieger, John Densmore, (yaaay!), Jimmy Greenspoon, and Pamela Des Barres are the prominent interviews on camera here. Nothing earth shattering, but it’s nice to see/hear John Densmore’s abridged opinions.

The Jim Morrison Phenomena in Paris - it’s spirited. You’ve got a handful of people who met JDM in Paris and hung out; they recount his mood and what he was (arguably) saying at the time. There’s a French librarian who breaks down a lot of the parallels in the subtleties of the lyrics w/Greek literature. There’s a somewhat annoying 20 something saying Jim was done with music and The Doors and blah, blah, blah that isn’t substantiated w/anything. There is an interview w/Michelle Rudler, who is listed as “Coroner” who says lots of things were done immoral in the documentation of Morrison’s death. It’s about 50 minutes.

All of the extras on the Special Edition are here as well.

So in conclusion, if you are looking to buy The Doors movie on DVD, by Oliver Stone, this is the one to accumulate. The movie is intelligent enough but, you know, it’s fictional and not historically moral enough to garner more than 3 stars from this reviewer.

‘The Doors’ were one of the greatest rock and roll bands of the sixties and the quintessential California group of the decade. They so embodied the West Glide counterculture experience that viewing this biographical film about Jim Morrison and The Doors also provides a engaging opinion of the cultural and spiritual forces that drove Jim and that entire generation to challenge the situation quo of the American mainstream.

What exactly is the just anecdote of the life and death of Jim Morrison? Is it the chronicle of one of the many rebellious young adults of the time who in looking for an alternative plan of living got lost along the contrivance in the drugs, alcohol and sexual freedom that so dominated that culture? Or is Jims’ anecdote a deeply mystical epic announcing the rebirth of dilapidated shamanism into the collective consciousness of the twentieth century? The record of someone chosen by the spirits to bring the ‘old ways’ to a recent generation looking for something to hold the spiritual void brought about by the loss of plan in the Christian God?

Director Oliver Stone has played the mythmaker to perfection in this fabulous film providing us with the fresh experience of entering into the American Dreamtime. Layering mundane worldly events intermitently with glimpses of the psychic, shamanic forces motivating those events we are given the opportunity to chose for ourselves what level of reality we are willing, or ready to obtain. A truly considerable accomplishment.

As for the performance of Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison, it couldn’t have been better. His ability to choose both the physcial appearance and dusky persona of the legendary rock star so completely is beyond incredible. Without ask Val was born to play this role.

Did Jim really possess he was the “Electric Shaman” called by the spirits to inaugurate the “Doors of Perception” to a sleeping world? Was he Dionysus reborn, here to utilize his suggestive music and lyrics to nettle his followers and bring to fruition his unique ‘Rites of Spring’ with “Golden copulations in the streets of L.A.” More likely he was playing the piece of the mischevious Indian ‘Trickster’ leading us once again in the injurious direction. Maybe it’s unprejudiced like his Mother said long ago while the passe Indian lay dying along the roadside in the California desert. “It’s fair a dream Jimmy, that’s all it is.”

So relax, explain no awe, “Kiss the Snake” and savor the dash!

Some people acquire that a determined kind of thing can bring a splendid luck to them. Clover with four leaves, shadowy cat (in England), and Japanese beckoning cat. Then, what if a luck happens to be something you can purchase, accept, and exhaust? And consume to ruin?

“Intacto” is a bizarre, unnerving, and quite fresh thriller from young Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Its narrative is complicated, but is not hard to follow. One crimial Thomas (Sbaraglia), the only surviver of a poor plane smash, meets a unfamiliar guy Federico in the hospital. Federico asks Thomas to plot a card impartial casually. Runt did Thomas know that it is only the beginning of games that test his absorb luck … the game that becomes more and more deadly as it goes on.

As Federico and Thomas go together, they unwittingly involve some other ‘lucky’ characters; Sara, female police investigator who seems to be unaware of her absorb luck; Arejandro, a bull fighter who somehow got never hurt; and Sam, the owner of a casino (top-notch Max von Sidow), who survived one of the tragic events known in the world’s history.

This is Fresnadillo’s feature debut (though his short “Esosados” has been nominated for Oscar in 1996), and like another talented Spanish director of “Commence Your Eyes,” he has his contain style. The characterize always exudes some eerie atomosphere (like David Lynch), and though his story gets slightly confusing (especially the conclusion), he carries this recent material to the raze tranquil gracefully.

There are many “games” that test the characters’ lucks, which might glimpse, to be frank, somewhat comical to some of us. Certainly few of us would dare to do these things, risking their limbs and life, but the director has enough visual skills to convince us that there must be some people who try to race THERE, blindfolded.

My material says that the director actually witnessed the plane accident in the Canary Island when he has a child, and that experience is piece of inspiration of the film. Also, he has read the books of Primo Levi (”Survival in Auschwitz”), whose background helped to accomplish the idea. The film at first behold looks too amazing, but finish inspection reveals that it contains thought-provoking things like the guilty feeling which some survivers of abominable accidents have.

But of course, you can be pleased it as entertainment, and as such “Intacto” is unbiased broad. And the images are very magnificent, such as the bleak landscape of the Canary Island (where the casino is area) .

Hollywood (Buena Bista, at the time of writing) has already bought the accurate of remake, and that fact testifies that the film is very current. If you like the kind of films like “Thesis” or “Inaugurate Your Eyes,” you should not miss this thriller.

My one complaint, which I’ll status at the very originate, is that the English subtitles remain even when the characters are speaking in English. It’s very annoying. English subtitles when they’re speaking Spanish (which is most of the film) makes sense… English subtitles when they’re speaking English is fair boring distracting.

Having gotten that out of the plot…

I don’t want to swear too grand of the yarn because half the fun is watching things gradually unfold, but I will say that this film has a very unusual premise, having to do with the nature of luck. The concept is that luck is an real “thing” that can be traded, stolen, and gambled away.

Our central character is a thief who, it turns out, has the gift of luck and so is pulled into this odd world of people who fetch luck. Many of these people are quite ruthless, and as the stakes gradually increase, our protagonist stands to lose far more than his knack for reliable luck.

The tone of this film is very creepy and clever… in many ways, it reminded me of “Blood Simple,” “Memento,” “Music of Chance,” or Atom Egoyan’s “Exotica.” Like all four of those movies, there’s a lot to believe and it’s handed to you in tiny pieces. This is a movie that requires your pudgy concentration. Fortunately, that’s not hard to give, as the film itself is absolutely though-provoking and chubby of colorful images and moments.

When I was in high school, we had a tradition where we’d go out and rent dreadful movies. Gradually, this changed to renting unusual movies and eventually segued into renting Gigantic movies. One of our well-liked actors was Malcolm McDowell, the smirking imp we’d seen in “A Clockwork Orange” and later in “O Lucky Man!”, another collaboration with the vast British director Lindsay Anderson (”This Sporting Life”, “In Celebration”, “Britannia Hospital”, and, incredibly, “The Whales of August”!) I grew particularly fond of his blend of sarcasm and vulnerability (vainly believing I possessed same; I may have been suitable) and as a result became quite desperate to peep this rare movie, which was actually supposed to be BETTER than “O Lucky Man!” I didn’t pick up to do so until a few weeks ago, fully nine years since I graduated high school. I was not disappointed.

As it stands, “If…” isn’t only a colossal Malcolm McDowell film, it’s also a titanic movie about the 60s in both Western society and more specifically Britain in its post-imperial hangover (one of the last British imperial dramas before the Falklands, the conflict in and evacuation of Aden–present-day Yemen–reached completion in 1967, probably while “If…” was filming) . The title itself apparently comes from the famed Kipling poem which embodied the highest ideals of imperial Britain. College House, the school attended by Mick Travis–McDowell–and his two friends, is dominated by prefects, or “whips,” seniors who control the student body in the name of the weak-willed headmasters and teachers, who narrate the 60s radical concept of liberal democracy. The coercive actions–cold showers, beatings–administered by the whips to Travis and his fellow rebels prefigure the punishment that would be delivered by the Chicago police, Parisian CRS, and Red Army to student demonstrators and the Czech people in May and August 1968 (in both capitalist and communist regimes the punishments are justified in the name of “society” or “the people”) .

Travis and his friends, the sarcastic Knightley (David Wood) and the pensive Wallace (Richard Warwick), negotiate their travails with wit and cunning and remove up allies along the design, a waitress from a local coffeeshop (Christine Noonan) and younger student Bobby Phillips (Rupert Webster) . These two apparently become lovers of Travis and Wallace, respectively. Interestingly, while Anderson follows the pattern of other 60s “rebel” movies by marginalizing women, the relationship between Wallace and Phillips is sensitively and touchingly handled. This was a rare thing for the macho boys of the Unique Left, whose radicalism stopped at the closet door and who generally seemed to gaze homosexuality as an aberration of the ruling classes. The film eventually ends with a surreal, bloody battle on school grounds that, while it will probably get post-Columbine viewers understandably squirm, seems, in the movie’s good universe, the only possibly raze to the institutionalized oppression Travis and his pals face.

Unbiased as in “O Lucky Man!” there are hilariously surreal touches to the movie, lessening the shock of its extinguish and underscoring the absurdity of life at College House. Fans of Anderson and McDowell won’t be disappointed, and any who are keen in the intersections between film and history are definitely recommended to rent or occupy this fascinating movie.

When i got out of the Navy and moved to Atlanta in 1972, there was a gargantuan hole-in-the-wall cinema (174 seats, one broken) called “The Film Forum”. George and Mike Ellis served the best original popcorn in town, and ran movies you honest didn’t behold anywhere else in the early 70’s — I first saw “The Boys in the Band”, “The Ruling Class” and “Phantom of the Paradise” at the Film Forum. I saw so many vast films there that i can forgive them for running “Harold & Maude” about every fifth week…

In addition to two shows a night every evening of their regular feature for that week, they also ran a special $1 midnight movie on Fridays and Saturdays. (In later years, “Rocky Awe” became the midnight standard for a couple of years.)

And that is where i saw “…if…” for the first time.

I’ve been an anglophile most of my life (beginning at a rather tender age with “Swallows & Amazons”), so i had some understanding of what English Public (private) School life was likely to be like, and may have understood what was happening here more snappily than some of my firends who saw it with me.

In the context of what starts out as a resplendent starightforward-appearing school film, Anderson & MacDowell give us a rather Marxist allegory of current class struggle, steadily but almost imperceptibly appealing from realism to a surreal parable of revolution.

The final sequences, with the petite old-fashioned lady with the submachine gun blazing away screaming “Bastards! Bastards!”, the school prefects organising the “profitable” (loyalist) students to fight the Revolution and pitched battle raging, have stayed with me ever since, even when i wouldn’t survey the film for years at a time.

MacDowell (in his first accurate feature role) gives an extraordinary performance that both foreshadows and (in my plan) *over*shadows his next role, as Alex in “A Clockwork Orange”. “Clockwork” was hailed, fine powerful rightly, as a conception of a disintegrating society tearing itself to pieces — “..if..” covers grand the same ground, and does it better and more memorably in cramped than Kubrick’s titanic canvas and big brush strokes.

MacDowell’s Mick Travis and his friends are gorgeous remarkable decent if disaffected characters; but the System, which cannot tolerate any variances, must either grind them down or drive them to rebellion — they settle the latter, and you will never reflect of school in the same scheme again after you notice their unhurried radicalisation and the result.

The theatrical cleave on disk one looks Unbelievable. I won’t go off on the expend of color filters or the other deficiencies of the film, the movie as a whole works and the performances are spot-on. Gaynor and Brazzi are well-behaved. The Road Exhibit restoration on disk 2 is definitely worth checking out for a few minutes of extra footage here and there but overall the image is softer and less detailed. But the theatrical version on disk one is jaw dropping and well worth the note of the disk. Highly Recommended.

I have seen the 94-minute “making of” documentary that has been created for the Blu-Ray release. It is wonderfully crafted, with interviews from accurate WWII Seabees and nurses, along with astonishing Technicolor footage of the war. This documentary is hosted most charmingly by Mitzi Gaynor, who looks terrific and is completely self-effacing and appetizing. It also includes interviews (but no peformance footage) of the stars of the recent Lincoln Center revival. The observations by relatives of Rodgers, Hammerstein, and Logan are candid and insightful. This promises to be an wonderful release.

The fourth disc of Neon Genesis Evangelion marks a turning point in the series, although it may be one that’s not immediately noticeable. From here on out the characters inaugurate to lose control of their lives, surroundings and the world as the series speeds up to its conclusion in disc eight.

If disc number three marked the level-headed before the storm, disc four is the light, overcast sprinkle that hints at the coming hurricane. The first episode on the disc is grand like those seen previously, but it’s positive that the characters’ hopes of a proactive campaign against the Angels are slowly turning more defensive and desperate. The second episode highlights that even more as we survey very microscopic of Shinji, Asuka and Rei, but instead focus on a completely different Angel attack that leaves NERV only moments away from destruction.

The third episode (number 14 of 26), though, marks the precise demolish with the first half of the series. The minimalist style of flahsbacks, on-screen text and dumb addition (and subtraction) of questions about the series is a style that the director, Hideaki Anno, will employ more and more frequently as the series progresses. While this episode may seem to be the typical ‘midpoint-of-the-series’ recap that so many other anime series have, it also marks a serious shift in focus, style and priority in the series (not to mention an increasingly dwindling budget on the piece of the production studio) .

Nonetheless, this disc is every bit as trustworthy as the three preceeding it, if not better. As the direction and tone of the series continue their curve into the frantic, the series truly begins to separate itself from virtually any other anime series ever made.

Technically, this disc is as minimal as its predecessors. The video and audio, though, remain salubrious. As with the other discs, I would eventually care for to peruse a version with more extras and episodes, but for now I am direct to simply absorb it on DVD.

As with disc three, I do not recommend starting with this disc, but if you for some reason felt the need to skip the first half of the series, then definitely gain this DVD. “Evangelion” continues to improve on itself throughout the course of the series and this volume is no exception. With the sole caveat that there are no special extras do a minimal character biography fraction, I wholheartedly recommend this DVD of “Evangelion” honest as powerful as the previous ones.

At this point, Evangelion really starts to rep going. First, a exiguous bit of Misato’s past is explained as well as some more fan service for her. The second episode has the three pilots testing in their EVAs with no clothes. But that only fraction B. Fraction A of the record is the Angel which is a virus threatening to capture over the MAGI system. This episode also gives fan service to Ritsuko and her past as well. The last episode has Shinji and Rei testing in opposite EVAs, but to know prevail. The majority of the episode is mostly spent on recapping all that has happend thus far. Overall, these episodes will leave many wanting more and more. But I guess thats what makes Evangelion so broad. It gives you a microscopic taste and keeps you coming serve for more. And if you assume there isn’t any reason to bewitch the DVD if you have VHS, your cross. There is aloof the nicely dubbed versions of Spanish and French dialoge. The DVD will definetely maintain Bios on Angel #10 and #11. This is also the turning point in Evangelion where everything starts getting shown. So if you are a current comer to EVA, you must inspect this volume. And how about ADV accelerate up they’re releasing on this. Approach on, the Evangelion movie comes out this summer. Lets hustle.

This program is well done and very informative. It is definitely worth watching for anyone alive to in the trouble in Rwanda. The interviews alone beget the program worthwhile.

My only complaint about this program is that it is unmistakably USA-centric. A valuable focus of the program is the uncouth role of the U.S. in opposing every meaningful proposal for timely intervention or serve of the meager peace keeping force on the ground in Rwanda. Though all the attention given to this aspect of the Rwandan misfortune is worthwhile, there was no discussion of the responsibility of other Security Council members, especially France. The role of France is particularly deserving of analysis because of its conclude relationship with the regime, its role as a military adviser to the regime, and the spend of its troops in Operation Turquoise to shelter the regime’s retreat to refugee camps outside Rwanda once the genocide had been completed. Yet the program hardly mentions France at all, level-headed unapologetic over its role in Rwanda. Similarly, the program skips over entirely the difficult questions surrounding the troubling lack of legal leadership of the Catholic and Anglican Churches in what had nominally been the most Christian country in Africa. The feckless response of the UN leaders in Current York is not examined very closely, notwithstanding a few regretful, self-serving bromides from Kofi Anan, who was in charge of peace keeping missions at the time. There is not a single mention of UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who helped suppress any effective UN response. If time did not permit examination of all these issues, then the coverage of the American response should have been reduced to allow more focus on Kigali, Unique York, and Paris.

I recommend this program, but I also recommend that it be re-titled: “Ghosts of Rwanda: The American Perspective.” I also recommend “Bystanders to Genocide” in the September 2001 mutter of The Atlantic (the author was briefly interviewed in the program) and the relate of Organization of African Unity, “Rwanda: The Preventable Genocide”, both of which are available on the Internet. There are also a number of edifying books on this tragedy.

While this documentary by Frontline covers a very considerable shriek, and is done very well, I must warn you, it is absolutely heartbreaking to peer. It is 48 hours later following my viewing, and I am collected sobbing. We said “Never Again” after the Holocaust, and yet, the world stood by while this most harmful of genocides took residence. I mediate it is necessary for everyone to educate themselves about this unfavorable point in the world’s history, and on that basis, I would highly recommend this DVD. However, be careful,this video is not for the fainthearted or sensitive viewer. Meanwhile, another genocide is taking plot in the Darfur situation of Sudan, and again, the United States and the UN are turning a blind look. Tragic.
